DIY dry shampoo to space out your washes

The use of dry shampoo has been booming in recent years and is gradually becoming a bathroom essential. This cosmetic is the ideal solution for spacing out your hair washing and can be made at home in a matter of seconds.

The benefits of dry shampoo

During the day, our hair accumulates pollutants suspended in the atmosphere, while the scalp produces sebum and perspiration. The hair becomes greasy, dirty and loses its volume. To avoid having to wash your hair too often, you can use a dry shampoo between two normal shampoos.

Express wash

Often offered in spray form by manufacturers, the DIY dry shampoo you make at home is in powder form. It contains corn, oat or rice starch powder that absorbs impurities and excess sebum. Your hair is instantly given lightness, volume and shine.

Compatible with all hair types

Dry shampoo can be applied to all hair types, short or long, straight or curly, dry or greasy.

Dry shampoo does not affect colouring. On the contrary, you avoid frequent washing, which dulls the artificial colouring, causes your natural colour to reappear and your white hair to reappear.

Easy blow-dry

Dry shampoo lightens hair. Some hairdressers use it as a styling product: it gives fine hair volume and texture, tames spikes, makes thick hair more manageable for blow-drying, softens curls...

Less frequent washing

Dry shampoo is used between two normal shampoos. Even when using the best quality organic cosmetics, too much washing is never a good idea. You run the risk of drying out your hair and scalp. The scalp can react with excessive sebum production, which makes the hair greasy. The use of a hair dryer also dries out the hair, which you avoid with dry shampoo.

On the other hand, the convenience of dry shampoo is to be commended as it takes less time, especially if you have long hair that takes a long time to dry. Furthermore, it is very useful when travelling when you don't always have the logistics and time.

How to make your own DIY dry shampoo?

The advantage of DIY dry shampoo is that you are guaranteed to use only natural ingredients. Because dry shampoo comes in powder form, it's easy to package and you don't have to worry about storage. Unlike a water-based cosmetic, it won't 'go bad' if you don't use it within a few days.

Ingredients

- Oat powder or corn or rice starch.

- Clay powder. If your hair is oily, use green clay. White clay is recommended for scalps that are drier and more easily irritated.

- Bicarbonate of soda.

- Peony powder: containing paeniflorine - a sedative and analgesic alkaloid - it relieves scalps prone to discomfort, irritation or dandruff.

- Arrowroot. This plant, also known as arrowroot, can be found in powder form in organic shops. It is used to enhance the texture of your hair.

All these ingredients should be used in equal parts. Pour them into a large bowl and mix with a fork to obtain a perfectly homogeneous powder.

How to use dry shampoo

- Store your dry shampoo in a spice jar. The holes in the lid help you distribute the powder evenly over the hair.

- Sprinkle the mixture all over your hair, concentrating on the roots. You can use a large make-up brush for application.

- Gently massage the powder into the hair with your fingertips so that it absorbs any excess oil and impurities that have clung to the hair.

- You can leave it on for two or three minutes, but it is not obligatory. (Take advantage of this time to apply make-up, brush your teeth, etc.)

- Brush your hair thoroughly, upside down, over the sink or bathtub to remove the powder.

And there you have it, your hair is clean, soft and full of volume!
